Naked On The Vague

Where previous material from Sydney’s Naked On The Vague put them in the same raucous, post-Stooges garage camp occupied by the Von Bondies or The Icarus Line (albeit with a idiosyncratic laid-back coolness in a Velvet Underground vein), their new material, going by the stunning leaked track ‘High Noon’ (listen below) sees their sonic palette expand into noisy, drifting chordscapes and beatless pulses.

As if Brian Jonestown Massacre or Jefferson Starship records were being forced through an Emeralds or Eno-esque lens, the instrumentation and melodies here are of a very distinct psychedelic school - hooky and driving in the same way expected of, say, The Strokes - but the sonic qualities are drawn-out, abstracted and dreamlike. The change puts them into darker territory; it is less immediate than their previous material, but certainly more interesting.

Twelve Dark Noons (Sacred Bones, 2012) - the EP from which ‘High Noon’ is taken - is the soundtrack to a mental horror film of the same name, starring Naked On The Vague’s core boy-girl duo in the lead roles. Check out the single below:
