Brighton / Berlin’s Dead Fader seem so intent on destroying speakers that the black-line waveforms SoundCloud feeds out to visually accompany their tracks resemble rolling pins, or sausages, or whatever antisocially-obese object you could care to name, representing a mix so loud that it only just matches the limitations of the software. Even to the point at which their label specifically references Japan’s aurally-damaging noise-king Merzbow in their press release.
A heady, disorientating cluster-blast of precariously-wobbling synths and near-industrial drum programming, all steeped in rasping distortion and a considerable neglect of the dancefloor, Dead Fader released their storming Luckeeey EP on Kid606’s Californian TigerBeat6 label last October - a brief sidestep from their usual 3by3 releases, and a further attempt to tear holes in speaker cones.
Thankfully, the newly-monikered ‘dumbstep’ / ‘clubstep’ subgenres are passed by here. Eschewing an easy reliance on “the drop” for a consistent barrage of unfriendly (but innovative) production techniques that disrobe the imitators, Luckeeey opener ‘OO——’ demonstrates the duo’s firm grasp of unsettling, post-Warp sound design and an ability to remain constantly at war with the listener.
