Brooklyn’s Here We Go Magic are back with a third album, A Different Ship, due to be released later in the year through Secretly Canadian, from which today’s featured track is taken.
Starting as the solo project of artist-turned-musician Luke Temple, Here We Go Magic’s first, self-titled LP was recorded on a 4-track with little more than a tom, synth, mic and guitar to create densely-layered and richly-textured loops, counterbalanced by Temple’s acoustic guitar lines and “stream of consciousness” lyrics. Since expanding into a full band for 2010’s Pigeons, the music has naturally taken on a more recognisable “band” formula, flitting between 80’s inspired indie-rock, psychedlia, electro-folk and even krautrock while still remaining largely unique. ‘Make Up Your Mind’ seems to find a balance between the two; the driving, bluesy urgency of the guitar lines become hypnotic in their repetition while the overall flow and tone of the song, punctuated and accentuated with stabs or washes of synths and layered vocals, gives the feeling that it would not be amiss alongside the likes of Talking Heads or Fleetwood Mac, yet as more of an update than an homage. In a word: captivating.
A Different Ship will be released on the 8th of May.
