Young Heel

“Young Heel makes experimental madrugada pop music. Brooklyn, NY.” When that’s all you’ve got to go on when researching a band it’s fairly obvious which word is going to stick out. Thankfully, Young Heel haven’t taken any left-field inspiration from Norwegian rock band Madrugada, or even Portugal’s moustachioed 1975 Eurovision Song Contest entry of the same name, but simply that “madrugada” translates as “dawn”, a perfect fit for the sleepily optimistic, 80s-tinged synth-pop mellowness which defines their sound.

The new Falls EP, available through their bandcamp for a measly $5 (that’s less cash than songs, always a happy exchange), has gradually been receiving the attention it deserves. Full of immaculately structured pop writing and themes and sounds seemingly lifted straight out of the 80s, while listening to Young Heel you could be forgiven for thinking that when Genesis broke up, instead of going solo, Peter Gabriel formed Animal Collective. That may not sound like it works but it definitely does.

“Snow Walk” is the second track from Falls, go give the whole thing a listen here.
