Evidently revelling in his anonymity, the bizarre-hop / space-beat producer Evian Christ’s musical output is traceable exclusively by his infrequent, irregular uploads to his youtube channel. There is some speculation that Evian Christ is a “known” producer, leaking out hobbyist productions under a pseudonym for interest’s sake; further sources still suggest that Evian Christ is already snapped up by the necessary industry parties and is under a “development” programme of patient, underground name-spreading. Another blogger believes that the namelessness is a simple legal device to avoid pursuance from the rights-holders of the material he cuts up and re-sets.
However cautious or optimistic one might be of discovering a hidden gem of talent and obscurity, there is certainly something in Evian Christ’s lush, loop-based productions. Full of carefully-picked reference material and genuinely innovative splicing, accompanied by esoteric moving shapes in a selective colour palette, each track reveals a slightly odder edge to its maker: beaty, dancey, breathy, soporific, jazzy, psychedelic etc. etc.
Wonderful, bizarre stuff.
