Laura Gibson

Amidst the hubub of excitement surrounding the official confirmation that two seminal bands will be reforming and performing this year, we could be forgiven for overlooking the rising tide of press supporting release of Laura Gibson’s second album, La Grande, the follow up to 2009’s Beast of Seasons. Thankfully we didn’t.

A comforting and comfortable work of Appalachian folk-soaked Americana, La Grande still runs a gamut of energy and emotions, from barn-storming to delicate, complemented by her 50s-era vocal style and emblematic of the town it was written in and named after, as well as Gibson herself. The daughter of a kindergarten teacher and forest ranger from the wilds of the North-West retires to a quiet Oregonian town with her nylon string guitar to write songs, swim in rivers and walk long walks. But don’t let that fool you. As the album will attest, and Gibson herself confess, “I’m not a lamb, I’m a lion”.

La Grande is due for release on January 24th on Barsuk Records and Jealous Butcher.
