Three years is a long time to go without a release in an age frequently referred to as that of instant information and market saturation. For the discerning and attentive listener, however, the world’s musical fountain never runs dry. Hell, three years is a chance to discover new inspiration, recover a forgotten cause and initiate a new chapter in life, precisely the tack taken by Portland-based AU, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland and his ever-revolving roster of musicians.
Now officially billed as a duo, with Dana Valatka (Jackie-O_Motherfucker, Mustaphamond) filling the role of pounding percussionist, AU have announced a new album, Both Lights, to be released next spring with a pre-release single, ‘Solid Gold’, out on January 9th. Having previously worked with Jonathan Sielaff (Parenthetical Girls, Nick Jaina), Mark Kaylor (Hamor of Hathor, CexFucx), Becky Dawson (Saw Whet, Ah Holly Fam’ly), and Sarah Winchester (A Weather), ‘Solid Gold’ gives a prominent role to Squealer favourite Colin Stetson, giving each member some breathing space to show their skills in a song of chamaeleonic diversity, while still maintaing AU’s signature energy and technical virtuosity.
Both ‘Solid Gold’ and Both Lights will be out on Hometapes in the US and The Leaf Label in Europe.
